About Us

Musical Playbox Tokyo (MPT) originally started off as a musical theatre open mic night in December 2023. The dream was to bring together musical lovers in Tokyo, and to create a warm, welcoming space for people to express, inspire and support others through the magic of musical story-telling.

The success and popularity of the event soon led to a regular open mic series. As the community grew, so did the need for a dedicated team to support it. An official committee was formed inside the theatre kids’ natural habitat: a karaoke box. The name “Musical Playbox Tokyo” was chosen. The word “Playbox” was coined to represent our mission of providing opportunities for musical theatre enthusiasts to let their creativity, self-expression, and imagination run free. In doing so, MPT became one of Tokyo’s first English-speaking communities dedicated exclusively to musical theatre.

Today, MPT continues to grow and flourish. It aims to continue building the Tokyo English musical theatre community by putting on events, workshops and productions that delight and inspire through the art of embodied storytelling and expression.
